Everyone isn’t blessed with monk-like focus. In the world of endless distractions, our attention is like a monkey swinging from one tree to another without focus. Pomodoro Technique is the right technique for those easily distracted people.

What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The key idea of the Pomodoro technique is to get things done in short bursts of time while taking numerous short breaks to refresh and relax. It is a simple yet very effective way to improve your work and study habits.

The Pomodoro Technique was invented in the early 90s by Italian developer and author Francesco Cirillo, who was a student back then. He named it “Pomodoro”, which means tomato in Italian, after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used to implement the system during his university days.
The concept is to break the work down your work into short, timed intervals called, “Pomodoros”, that are spaced out by short breaks when faced with any large task or series of tasks.

This not only trains your brain to focus for short periods and get work done but also can help improve your attention span and concentration.

How to get started?

Here are the steps:

  1. Write down a task you want to accomplish in a paper, which can be done in around 20 minutes. If you think the task takes more than 25 minutes then break it down to 25-minute sub-tasks.
  2. Set a timer, whether physical or digital, for 25 minutes. This is one Pomodoro.
  3. Work on the task for that 25 minutes. Turn your phones off, keep your Facebook, Twitter, emails or whatever that distract you out of mind. And if you get distracted in the middle of the 25 minutes, then start again from the beginning.
  4. Take a 5-minute break after the 25-minutes timer had gone off, and put a check mark next to the list of task you have written down.
  5. Repeat the above steps three more times and take a longer break once four Pomodoros are completed, which is 100 minutes of focused work.
